Sikaunzwe community profile

Sikaunzwe community is in the Kazungula district which is about 80 km from the tourist capital of Livingstone in the southern province of Zambia. Sikaunzwe has a catchment area of about 4000 people.

Adult literacy rates are extremely low, and most women in the community are living below the poverty line. Widows are typically found caring for several children from their extended families and are struggling to provide for their basic needs.

The majority of the peole in the district are peasant farmers. They grow crops of maize, sorghum and sweet potatoes on a small scale and sell their harvests for very little. HIV/AIDS has created hundreds of orphans in Sikaunzwe. Much needs to be done.
