Mtandile, located near Lilongwe, Malawi

Mtandile community profile

Your sponsored community of Mtandile is located just 5km west of Lilongwe, Malawi. The sub- urban slum is home to over 35,500 people. This farming community grows barely enough to feed its families. There is little access to safe drinking water. This combined with almost no sanitation facilities makes them vulnerable to waterborne diseases. Disease frequently attacks the community and health care facilities are scarce.

The cost of school supplies and entrance fees prevent children from attending school. Over 85% of the people are illiterate. This lack of education means few have any meaningful knowledge of what causes HIV and AIDS or how to prevent it. AIDS is widespread in Mtandile. Sadly, severe poverty has led many children to sell their bodies for food, increasing the number of infections.

Your support is helping to provide children with an education so they can rise above their current situation. Income generating projects have begun giving widows the opportunity to provide for their families. Home based care volunteers have been supplied and trained to improve the quality of assistance given to the sick. Because of you, change is happening in Mtandile.
